Industry structure, firm profitability, and how and why firms and industries change are the broad areas of expertise of Scott Rockart.
He focuses his research on the policies guiding repeated decision making – such as decisions about pricing, investment, research and product offerings. He studies how these policies are established and how they influence firms’ successes and failures. He designs his research and teaching to understand – and to help managers evaluate – the nature and potential of both existing policies and policy alternatives in specific industry contexts.
Dr. Rockart has direct work experience in strategy consulting and light manufacturing. Through field research he has developed knowledge of several industries including magazine publishing, semiconductor manufacturing and investment banking.
His research has appeared in Management Science, System Dynamics Review and Strategic Management Journal. He serves on the editorial boards of the Strategic Management Journaland Organization Science.
He received his PhD and MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his AB in economics from Princeton University.
